In a Patch of Clover

wikimedia commons

when the saints go marching in
tell me who will be in that
parade...

how many will watch
from the sidelines
holding their  brightly
colored balloons

praying for ascension
into the heavenly realm
who are the sinners
and who are the
saints...sometimes
it is hard to tell

how many will be
left behind wondering
why, why, why

in the great highlands
you can hear the drone
of the bagpipes, wailing
a sorrowful song...a bit
of Celtic thunder...

a four leaf clover placed
in open hands a bit of
wonder

posted for Poets United
writing about Saints...

and I wonder...

  7. Wonderful! For each event of Justice, there are saints. We can see who acts and who turns away and who at least has a balloon or a pen. OH--and then THE Saints at the final Judgment--mystery and wonder--what a spectacle that would be, what a wailing of bagpipes! And those of us who do God's will and those of us who are prodigal and maybe everyone will be there. Who can say?

One needs to be judgemental to appreciate the goodness extended by the 'saints' or may miss the opportunity. This is because what good they do are unheralded. Rightly so Truedessa!

    1. I think we might need to re-define the word "saint" - so many have walked the road unnoticed.

  16. I know which one I am, and a big old sinner it is! Loved this retelling of "When the Saints Go Marching In." There is a great Sara Groves song called "When the Saints" that is another look at who the saints really are, and what circumstances they must confront. This poem reminded me to look her up again. Thanks! Amy

    1. Amy, thanks, I looked up Sara Groves song and it was very moving. Saints come from very diverse backgrounds and they all have carried their load or burden in the journey.
