Victor Hugo - Transcends Time

Truedessa's Collection

A poet's soul longs for the mystic sea
collecting mementos, each picked with care
box of treasures, rose shells enchanted thee
waves of emotions, hidden pearl so rare

collecting mementos, each picked with care
10:10 tiny clock, the hour locked in time
waves of emotions, hidden pearl so rare
unlocking mystery, a bell does chime

10:10 tiny clock, the hour locked in time
partly threaded bracelet, preserving dreams
unlocking mystery, a bell does chime
Victor Hugo, sets a romantic scene

partly threaded bracelet, preserving dreams
on distant shores, a wanderer did roam
Victor Hugo, sets a romantic scene
poetic verses, form in ocean foam

on distant shores a wanderer did roam
composing tales, a journey of yearnings
poetic verses, form in ocean foam
arousing dreams, thy heart is discerning

composing tales, a journey of yearnings
box of treasures, rose shells enchanted thee
arousing dreams, thy heart is discerning
a poet's soul longs for the mystic sea

Author's note: This was written to bring
honor to this small treasure box, which
was found in an old family trunk.
I guess it was waiting for me!

  1. I love the title and the whole description of the treasure box is charming. I also admire your rhyme scheme, which has something of the sestina in your use of recurring words. This must have been a painstaking piece of writing.

    1. Thanks Kerry, I often have trouble with titles. It took a bit of time to write, but I wanted to capture the magic of the contents of the box.

    1. Thank Brian, the words seemed to come together sort of magical, but I did have a form in mind as I wanted to give it an olde world feel. I am not sure I did that :)

  10. What a gorgeous find, this treasure Box! I love the repeated phrases throughout the poem. Is this an actual form, or did you repeat them where they sounded right to you? It makes for a very lovely read.

    1. Hi Sherry, Yes this is an actual form the Pantoum. It is a bit tricky I have tried it before and it just sort of spoke to me so I ran with it. The box is delightful, I am trying to track down how old the box might be. I think it is an old cigar box.

  12. Oh, this is so sweet Trudessa. The repeated yearning of a poet's heart, the references to Victor Hugo. Brought me back many years when, as an undergraduate, I majored in French and actually read him in French. The years have erased so much of that language from my memory. I so much enjoyed reading this poem. Hope you enjoy the treasure box.

    1. That is true, as I ponder who the box belonged to in the family and I think she was sentimental and a bit romantic.

  15. The repetitions are just perfect. Form poetry always laughs at me and my free verse ways, so this poem is even more impressive to be because of that. I also love the descriptions.

    1. Hi Magaly, free verse is easier and I like the freedom, but for this one I just wanted it to have an old world flavor.
