My Favorite Earth Shoes

I slip my feet into my soft moccasins
they are my favorite earth shoes
made of soft deer hide with fringe and
colored plastic beads
attached to sturdy soles

Zipping my moccasins,  I venture outside
what wonders will greet me on this
sunny cold day…

I look for the herons that resided here
since spring, unfortunately, they are nowhere
in sight…perhaps, they have finally gone to
warmer shores, I will miss them

A large flock of geese are gathering
I think, they too, will soon migrate south
but, for today they seem happy just splashing
in the lake, some are sleeping facing the sun

I feel a chill, the wind blows, my feet
crunching the fallen leaves…. the trees
appear thin with bare limbs.  Once unseen
abandoned nests, a reminder of spring’s song

The honk, honk, honk of the geese echoes across
the lake with a dog picking up the beat…
gruff, gruff, ruff, ruff…

Coming around the wooded bend, I sense something
in between the trees, there is movement
suddenly,  I see her, a deer with big dark eyes nibbling
on some bushes…. I smile…we walk quietly hoof to shoe
shoe to hoof, sole to soul…united in the moment

beauty is found

  1. O! I love it: from favorite earth shoes to birds and empty nests to the deer. Thanks for inviting me on this walk with you. With so much going on in the world, I was hoping for the signs of life that finally came in this poem. I'm relieved. Thank you!

  2. Such a lovely poem, taking us to the lake populated by your feathered friends - and a lovely dark-eyed deer. Wonderful to have so much beauty close by. Moccasins make the best earth shoes.

  4. Your moccasin "earth shoes" sound very comfortable. Sad when the herons and geese migrate, and one knows it will be a long winter before they appear again. But, alas there is the appearance of the deer...sole to soul, united in the moment! A beautiful poem.

  5. I like all the sights and sounds of nature in the poem. Our warm country becomes the host of migratory birds. They also come to the State where I live. Beautiful.

  9. What a beautiful poem. I felt like I was stepping back in time to an earlier, more peaceful world. How wonderful that you have the time and space to live in such an earth centred way. Suzanne - https://wayfaring9.wordpress.com/2023/11/11/blue-days/
