Fisherman's Tale

Untitled
by Thomas Eakins (1910)
Fair Use

They gathered with nets on the shoreline
on a dark rainy day, searching for a sign

it was rumored that s ship of dreams sailed
carrying treasures beyond the mystic veil

cold and hungry they cast out their heavy nets
through the fog, formed ghostly silhouettes

echoes of deep regrets, ballad of lost souls
who among you, will hear the last bell toll

with humble hearts, working side by side
hidden full moon, pulling hope with the tide

it is said their nets were bountiful with fish
and the ship of dreams full- filled their wish

perhaps, this is an old fisherman's tale
for all we know it could have been a whale

  3. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It conjures images but questions at the same time. It's but sweet and sour. haha

  10. I'd rather believe in the ship of dreams. I'm a dreamer, can't deny it.

  11. I really like you presented a whole tale with a happy ending, and that you accomplished it in so few lines is no small feat. Well done and viva la!

  12. Know plenty of fishermen near. Dreams in a boat would be all I'd want. Hard arse work comes to play upon the bay.

  13. Dream catch... I like that. We often don't know what was truly in the haul, perhaps all we really need is the story.

  18. Oh I do hope it was a ship of dreams.....not an old fisherman's tale. I need to believe in the magic.

  24. I can feel the damp and chill of the weather in the lines:
'cold and hungry they cast out their heavy nets
through the fog, formed ghostly silhouettes'
and love the internal rhyme of 'silhouettes / regrets'
and the ending with the whale!
