Untitled by Thomas Eakins (1910) Fair Use They gathered with nets on the shoreline on a dark rainy day, searching for a sign it was rumored that s ship of dreams sailed carrying treasures beyond the mystic veil cold and hungry they cast out their heavy nets through the fog, formed ghostly silhouettes echoes of deep regrets, ballad of lost souls who among you, will hear the last bell toll with humble hearts, working side by side hidden full moon, pulling hope with the tide it is said their nets were bountiful with fish and the ship of dreams full- filled their wish perhaps, this is an old fisherman's tale for all we know it could have been a whale
written for imaginary garden with real toads

It's a wondrous tale, that's what it is!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this, thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I feel about this one. It conjures images but questions at the same time. It's but sweet and sour. haha
ReplyDeletecold and hungry they cast out their heavy nets
ReplyDeletethrough the fog, formed ghostly silhouettes
These lines convey so much of what we see in the photo.
I really like the rhyme and flow of your poem with it's story telling reminds me of a sea shanty. Most enjoyable to read.
ReplyDeleteI think I can see the hope that for a wonderful catch in your words. So many different things to see in an image like this.
ReplyDeleteInteresting to see the varied poems drawn from this image. This one speaks of a happy ending!
ReplyDeleteA wonderful tale...."pulling hope with the tide"......the ship of dreams.........I love it!
ReplyDeleteechoes of deep regrets, ballad of lost souls
ReplyDeletewho among you, will hear the last bell toll
This is such a powerful image!!
I'd rather believe in the ship of dreams. I'm a dreamer, can't deny it.
ReplyDeleteI really like you presented a whole tale with a happy ending, and that you accomplished it in so few lines is no small feat. Well done and viva la!
ReplyDeleteKnow plenty of fishermen near. Dreams in a boat would be all I'd want. Hard arse work comes to play upon the bay.
ReplyDeleteDream catch... I like that. We often don't know what was truly in the haul, perhaps all we really need is the story.
ReplyDeleteA whale! I've seen this picture before.
ReplyDeleteThis is great writing ... the kind that leaves you racing for the next line. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteI liked the flow of your words. Excellent penmanship!
ReplyDeleteWonderful! I feel like you were greatly inspired when you wrote it. Thanks for the magical feeling I felt from it. Great write!
ReplyDeleteOh I do hope it was a ship of dreams.....not an old fisherman's tale. I need to believe in the magic.
ReplyDeleteI prefer this version of the Picture ...Bravo!

A fabulous take on the prompt... think this one's my favourite. Especially liked: echoes of deep regrets, ballad of lost souls
ReplyDeletewho among you, will hear the last bell toll
"echoes of deep regrets, ballad of lost souls" Love
ReplyDeleteGreat write
A universal tale, I think (having known many fishermen) and nicely told here.
ReplyDeleteyou leave us in the grip of mystery, Nice. "...for all we know"

Monday WRites 126 is live i invite you to link in
much love...
I can feel the damp and chill of the weather in the lines:
ReplyDelete'cold and hungry they cast out their heavy nets
through the fog, formed ghostly silhouettes'
and love the internal rhyme of 'silhouettes / regrets'
and the ending with the whale!
