The Willow Will Always Weep

Claude Monet - Weeping Willow

In sorrow the willow will always  weep
opening
her heart , tears  softly  flow
crying for a world, she never sleeps

planting seeds, dreams can grow deep
beneath  moonlight her boughs glow
in sorrow the willow will always weep

protecting precious secrets you keep
hidden in her trunk in the earth below
crying for a world, she never sleeps

in the darkness, the reaper creeps
across the river  the wind  does  blow
in sorrow the willow will always weep

some will fall the mountain is too steep
darkness, the crow instinctively knows
crying for a world, she never sleeps

hope in a horizon, sun begins to peep
will today be the day that love grows
in sorrow the willow will always weep
crying for a world, she never sleeps

For this week’s challenge, let’s spend some time and thought in our hearts with trees, for nurture, communication, grace and grief. You decide.

Thank you for visiting - may your roots grow deep

author's note:  Today, I went for a walk and a willow branch had fallen in the lake, the victim of the latest storm. A heron was balancing on it and it made me weep.

  1. Beautiful. Your poem sums up life at present. I love the Monet painting you have used as an illustration too. I have never seen it before. Suzanne - Mapping Uncertainty.

  2. Grief pours so bittersweetly, like the sweeping boughs of the willow -- The fourth stanza here is stellar. Something unfurls from the chest, becomes substantial in this shriven world.

    1. The grief is heartfelt. The Willow is a tree I resonate with, my soul tree.

  3. I think the willows will keep weeping, so long as they keep standing. A fitting subject for a cascading villanelle!

  4. Oh the weeping of the willow. I love weeping willow trees, the trees of my childhood. The vision of the heron on the fallen branch is so beautiful. And the tree weeping for the world is so moving.

    1. As, I came across the heron on the Willow I paused in the moment for reflection. I have a photo maybe, I will post it.

  5. The villanelle form works so sweetly here. We should all be weeping with the willow.

Mind you, our neighbour lost 3/4 of his weeping willow 2 or 3 years ago, and it survived beautifully. Those dead branches form a vital part of the ecosystem.

  6. And yet with that sacrifice, the willow gave something to the heron.
