Who Can Tame the Beast

Saeed Khan/AFP via Getty Images

The spirit of fire can be a mighty beast
when it is raging out of control
destroying everything in its path

there is no place to hide from
roaring flames,  can this dragon
be tamed

can an inferno of words, calm
this beast that rises higher within
me, trying to grasp the magnitude
of the scorching trail of ash & soot
blowing with the four winds

shall we call upon the deities of rain
to lend a helping hand, would they
hear the cries of the living and mourn
the dead

who can snuff this fire that consumes
the land...firefighters work endlessly
to control widespread mayhem

birds have wings to lift them above
a burning landscape but, what of
the other creatures who have no
wings

my heart is heavy if only tears could
douse the flames I would cry a river
I lip prayers of hope for containment

author's note: My heart grieves for
all the loss.

  2. What is happening in Australia is catastrophic and beyond heartbreaking. I, too, am praying for containment. I know what it is like to be in the path of a forest fire. All the best to you, Truedessa!

  5. How to contain the beast--well expressed. The beast keeps changing form, becomes more and more disturbed.

  7. Hi Truedessa - the fires are just horrific and one cannon imagine what everyone affected is going through. I sincerely hope the weather will calm itself earlier than projected. It's just too difficult to conceive from here ... I'd be terrified. Hilary

  10. I too have been thinking of all the animals that cannot fly. Fire can be a wonderful, cleansing thing until it rages out of control, fed by heat and raging wind that tasks a fireman to exhaustion. (What a job they have) And in the end we'll get what we deserve. But what of the animals?

    1. Fire can be cleansing but, in this case it's a fiery beast. I too wonder about those suffering animals in it's path. The fireman are true heroes.

  11. We have to grieve our way into the thick of that smoke, asking, what is life in a time of such wildfire? Important work -- thanks for helping out.

    1. I agree Bjorn and the firefighters risk their own lives to battle this fiery beast. How can we prevent this in the future?

  15. Is humanity prepared to pay the price, required to slay this beast? Honestly, I don't think so.
