Do you hear the elephants song
once multitudes, stood strong
for lost family, trumpets wail
yesterday's memories prevail
roaming the vast savanna free
munching from baobab trees
but, then man decided to hunt
darkness they had to confront
killed for their precious tusks
lifeless lies their bodily husk
under red, yellow, orange skies
an elephant unnecessarily dies
do you hear the elephants song
it lingers in a land they belong
in small herds they now wander
precious few travel over yonder

I missed Sherry's weekly challenge
"When Animals Speak"
It's been a rough week....
wishing you peace....
A sad song, Truedessa. I like the couplets, which emphasise the solid form of elephants, which are so fragile – living oxymorons. They show us how to stand together and look after each other. It makes me so angry that they are still being hunted.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kim! After reading Sherry’s post I heard the elephants speak asking to live in peace.
DeleteIvory hunting is such a waste.
ReplyDeleteThat it is Alex so sad!
DeleteI hear the elephants' mournful song, so well reflected in your poem. It seems everything that lives, lives in fear of, or in spite of, we humans. We need to learn to tread lightly and respectfully like the indigenous peoples of the earth. If they were our leaders now, the earth would heal.
ReplyDeleteWe need leaders with a vision to heal the earth and its inhabitants.
DeleteElephants are such wonderful animals. I hope we can save them.
ReplyDeleteMe too!
DeleteThis is the perfect response to Sherry's challenge, and I'm pleased you posted it here. We ought to listen to the sad song of the elephants before it is too late.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ingrid I felt I had to speak for them.
