Spring Equinox

Sitting on the lake shore
this warm spring day
there is a gentle breeze

I inhale, filling my lungs
with the fresh air of the
moment, exhaling winter's
bitterness

The geese are honking
pairing off establishing
nesting territory

In the distance a robin’s song
and a chickadee chorus

The smell of sage
sweet-grass and dried lavender
fill the air

Closing my eyes, I pick
up my drum offering a
song of hope and renewal

Thump, thump, thump
the rhythmic beat echoes
and my heart flutters along
with bird wings…

Chanting out songs of spring
my drum vibrates with each
syllable…

Where are you roots,  look no further
than the giant budding trees…for they
know the beauty of growth…

Where are your dreams look no further
than you heart, for there is the
seed of possibility

Embrace the light of spring
if nature can start over
so might we humans

  1. Yes yes yes! I love this! We used to go to Bermuda for January and February every year and I lOVED hearing the chickadees! The past 5 years, we've switched to San Diego...and I miss that unique chorus they made! I most especially love the final three stanzas here. Beautifully writ!

  3. A rhythm, a renewal, an invitation, we are lucky to hear the call of wild geese and the drum of heartbeat and life.

  6. A gentle poem, Truedessa, which had me sitting beside you on the lake shore. I love how your words appeal to all the senses, with the feeling of lungs full of fresh air, the sounds of the geese, robin and chickadee, and the wonderful scents of sage, sweet-grass and lavender.

I enjoy siting with this poem and taking in nature before fitting in the sound of the drum against beating wings. Lovely.

  10. I like very much all of the details you included. My favorite stanza is:
    "Embrace the light of spring
    if nature can start over
    so might we humans"
Such a wonderful message for these times!
