April's Changeability

April smells of fresh rain showers
and the winds are changeable
with each new day, much like
my melancholy mood

The willow trees are blooming
their long slender boughs
seem to dance and sway to
some distant drum that only
nature can hear

I sit upon her sturdy roots looking
out at the open lake waters, I close
my eyes for a quick day dream in
the afternoon sun, the geese seem
to have their own plan,  honk, honk
honking…chaos in the afternoon

My eyelids flutter open and to my
surprise there is a great blue heron
standing perfectly still in the water
before me, full of grace
full of patience

I dare not breathe captivated
by this beautiful creature tilting
its head our eyes meet, then in
mere seconds on outstretched
wings it takes flight

The wind shifts and my mood
changes to a  lighter shade of blue
filled with gratefulness
I stand stretching my legs
stretching my arm
finding balance brings joy

  1. A perfect example of pathetic fallacy, Truedessa. I love that the ‘geese seem to have their own plan’ and the surprise blue heron – I haven’t seen any yet this year, but I know they’re about because people have been complaining about them raiding their garden ponds.

  6. I like the structure of this, and the varying line lengths of the stanzas. The heron is a wonderful moment.
