Shelter Me

Shelter me from harsh winter days
I’m feeling blue with not much to say
a polar vortex coming from the north
sub zero temps offer no warmth

chug chug chug goes the old furnace
environmental issues should concern us
burning through oil and thin wallets
car batteries die costing more dollars

shelter me from harsh winter days
the north wind blows having its way
dappled sunlight a precious gift
into a surreal day dream I drift

chug chug chug goes the old furnace
can light guide us in our life purpose
finding joy and personal fulfillment
creating poetry brings enrichment

shelter me from harsh winter days
chase these melancholy blues away
awaiting springs bountiful arrival
nature will bring songs of revival

author's note:  It has been brutally cold here
and my car battery died.
I am worried about the goose and the ducks
tucked away in their cove.  How will they
survive?  sigh..

  1. You made me feel sorry for you living in the cold. We don't have much of that around the Texas area close to the Golf of Mexico.

    1. Well, it is life in the northeast you have to expect cold weather. It has just been a longer stretch of cold this year.

  2. Doesn't sound appealing. The old furnace sounds as if is nearly on its last chug. Glad I don't live where it snows or gets horribly cold.

    1. The furnaces have trouble when it below zero just trying to keep it at the set temperature. Whether it be new or old.

  4. Hi Truedessa! I am sorry that your car battery died. Definitely an unwanted expense. These cold days are brutal on batteries, furnaces, humans, and wildlife. I think all of us are waiting for spring!! Always great to see you!

  6. I worry about the creatures, too, who must be so cold and hungry. Here the light is lasting longer in the late afternoon, a sign of hope! I really like the line "shelter me from harsh winter days. Where my son and daughter in law live, they have to plug a heater into their car engine overnight.

  7. I always think about the animals, and hope they have shelter. This has been, and continues to be, a harsh winter.
