The evening sky was growing darker. The clouds hung low an ominous warning of the fast-approaching storm. Lightning cracked the sky and thunder roared. The rain pouring over the fresh graves as the roses and lilies wilt.
"The dead were settling in under their mud roof and something was shuffling overhead". Jake the undertaker was dragging his long shovel as he headed back to the shed. His day was done with that last heap of dirt. Wiping his face of the days grime he silently prayed as he always does for the dead. Rest in peace.
Suddenly, there in the darkness a black cat sprang out chasing a small mouse. The undertaker thought there has been enough death for today. His legs and back ached as he shuffled after the cat. Spooky, he said, "it's time for us to go home".

DeleteI love the way you set the scene in the opening paragraph, Truedessa, and the atmosphere created by the storm, especially the ‘rain pouring over the fresh graves as the roses and lilies wilt’, and the contrast with the witty ending. Spooky is a great name for a black cat.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim for the interesting prompt lines.
DeleteThe cat and mouse were a nice touch, especially a cat named Spooky.
