Human - Senses

artist unknown

In an evolving electronic world
I wonder...
would we forget how to be human

to think with our minds, expanding
our imaginations, discovering new
ideas & dreams...

to see the world through our human
lens, focusing on the beauty that
surrounds us,  landscapes full of  color
sky blue, meadow green and tone
of earthly browns...

to taste natures offerings,  would we
remember to honor the three sisters
corn, bean and squash

to hear the world through our natural
ears,  to sing along to the songs of earth,
wind, fire and water...

to touch another human, mind, body
and spirit, leaving more than a fingerprint
in the world for generations to come...

In an evolving electronic world
I wonder...
would we forget humanity

  1. Oh this is the poem I wish I had written. I love the things you have mentioned that we enjoy through our natural senses.........connecting with the natural world is the best route to our share humanity, I do believe. Recognizing we are all interconnected. Beautifully done, my friend.

  2. I think we have almost forgotten it. It happened very quickly with the advent of technology.

    1. I think you are right, people are too comfortable texting on their phones and less comfortable talking face to face

  3. I wonder, too, how soon we'll forget our relationship to living things. Some may have already, in the drive to exploit. Others might realize more and more that this extension of our selves has extreme limits. But here is your poem to remind us. Lovely!

  4. What's happening all around us everywhere & not just in a particular country is enough to feel ashamed of calling ourselves as humans. But you've shown what a fully evolved human being would be like. Nice.

  8. As soon as the internet reared its head, poof it started to go. Now most everything is digital. Even texting at the dinner table when you are right there. Dumb!

    1. Everything in moderation I guess. One of the things that annoy me is when people text at dinner. Put down your damn phone and let’s have a conversation.

  9. In cyberspace one acts and functions as normal but still not connecting physically to a human. One laughs at a joke heard around the world but is still feeling lonely! Very true and very sad!

    1. I think technology has connected us in many ways and some positive, at the same we need balance.

  10. We forget and eventually we'll cease to exist.
Sorry, I'm not honoring any squash though.

    1. Lol I take it you are not a fan of eating squash. Maybe, you can substitute with an apple!

  11. Oh how beautifully you've express the dangers of an excessive reliance on technology. I like how you mention all the wonders of being human. Makes me happy to consider that I can appreciate a sunset. It is good to be human, though as a species we need to grow up spiritually, not just with technology.

  13. Great questions!\

I think people, who are inherently lazy, believe that dealing with technology is "easier" than dealing with people, who are pretty much unique, but complicated.

I think you have a good point. Communication really is an art form in many ways.

  14. It does seem that in our electronic world sometime our humanity is being lost. So much is done by machines or artificial intelligence. I heard on NPR that recently there was an actual DEBATE on a subject between a robot and a human debate team. The robot and the human team both prepared their arguments, etc. I don't know who ended up winning, as I was in the car and reached my destination. But really shocking to think that the robot could kind of 'think' enough to debate with humans.

    1. Hi Mary,

That was quite an interesting comment. A debate with a robot. I guess the logic really comes from the programmer.

  15. This is such a great poem especially the use of the tryptichs of words to underline what was once important in our lives. As Sherry says above; I wish I had written this!

  17. 'electronic world' and expanding your imagination don't go together, the electronic feeds the mind images of another's creation, switch off and take a walk, experience the real word, touch real trees, talk to real people....

  19. But - every technical 'advance' had to first be dreamed up in the mind of a human... As long as we have minds and dreams, surely our humanity stands a chance to understand more of our spirituality, without which we might be mere husks...
You sure set me thinking today. ♥

    1. Jinksy - you are right someone did have a dream which gave us the technology we have today. It offers so much, yet it takes. I think we just need balance of some sorts.
