There was a man who sailed shadowy seas
he drifted into her dreams one October eve
singing a song under the harvest moon
he wore his heart on his poe-ish  sleeve

through the misty haze, he stood alone
holding  a wilted rose, sadness in his eyes
the waves roared causing a commotion
she reached for him, under a starless sky

the turn of darkness took her by surprise
words fell painfully from moonlit lips
he sang the ballad of a haunting love
she traced his image with her fingertips

in the early morn' exactly half past three
a portal of light, escapes the grey clouds
suddenly, disappearing in an autumn mist
howling winds carry their final vowels

  1. Dark, dark, dark. I feel this describes a missed connection and it was fatal in the end. Or these two could not live without the other. It's very beautifully written, evocative to grief, death, and loss. I love your take on the prompt, it is well done and well written.

  2. What a haunting love story. From dreams, it became a portal where they can be together in another lifetime. The ballad is a poignant one, ending where the two hearts want to be.

    Thanks for joining in.

  4. This is a haunting poem...perhaps a love doomed by his grief for the one he lost. Sigh. Loss all around.

  6. It's strange how many of us have brought roses into the darkness. I wonder if it's the contrast or the thorns?

  11. I almost feel a tale of a dead sailor returning to bring his bride back into the sea... almost a fairy tale I think

  12. A dark tale of love--and death. It is sort of a dark fairy tale or myth perhaps.
I liked the whimsical detail of "he wore his heart on his poe-ish sleeve"

It is great to accord hope in a sudden turn for the worse. It does happen when love feelings are invoked. Wonderful write, True!
