Pileated Woodpecker |
What is that shrill coming from the trees
demanding my attention on a foul afternoon
a chisel like beak, tapping out a chant
what sort of wizardry can this be
sending out a brisk series of notes
I spin around in search of the magical sound
spying a bright red cap and wings of black
a white strip runs down your face and neck
tilting your head, you appear to be spellbound
drumming in a deep rapid rolling rhythm
a rare striking bird on a cold afternoon
channeling energy from the vast universe
pulsating beats in harmony with mother earth
rap, tapping a solo musician's wondrous tune
a standing ovation from an admirer below
clapping, that was quite the show

Author's note: I had an encounter
with a pileated woodpecker this week
I am honoring the visitation with this poem
Speaking of drumming it's
said that the drum solo on Tom Sawyer by Rush
was one of the best ever. RIP Neil...
enjoy - Thanks for visiting

DeleteNice! Same woodpecker we get around here.
ReplyDeleteNeil always said that even though the song was overplayed, he didn't mind hearing it as it was such a difficult piece to play.
Thanks Aex! I read he created that drum solo to be difficult, one that only he could master.
DeleteThe woodpecker brought me to a place of humbleness as I played my own hoop drum, simple in construction but, the beat comes from the heart.
Love this honorarium of the woodpecker.
