Peacefulness of the Setting Sun

Free Evening Nature photo and picture
courtesy of Pixabay

In the peacefulness of the setting sun
I drum sitting cross-legged upon the earth
the fibers of my being seemingly undone
my vision of the world becoming blurred

show me the way where the owls dreams
where the birds sing in harmonious song
where thoughts of love continuously stream
show me the place where my soul belongs

sunlight kisses the lips of radiant moonlight
drifting into the prairies where buffalo roam
a dreamer wanders into wondrous starlight
following heartbeats to a place called home

show me the way where heaven & earth meet
where the wildflowers grow strong and free
where deer sprint away from unknown streets
show me the place where my soul longs to be

in the peacefulness of the setting sun
I drum sitting cross-legged upon the earth
the fibers of my being seamlessly beating as one
following inner dreams, leads to self-worth

Passionate
purple-orange sunsets
gazing into your alluring orbs

Intertwined
limbs sway under moonlight
whispering songs of our endless love

Tenderness
feathery wings of night
together soaring breathtaking heights

Whimsical
nightingales stirring tune
our hearts touching in romantic beats

No Time For Pretty

Free Spikes Thorny Rose photo and picture
Courtesy of Pixabay

This is no time to make things pretty
Yet, we need pretty more than ever

In the rubble of natural disasters
there is a need to find mementos

A family photo, a hidden treasure
something the heart can cling to

After the ominous dark clouds pass
there is beauty in a clear blue sky

This is no time to make things pretty
Yet, we need pretty more than ever

How long can we live in this mess
the beds unmade, the roofless homes

How long can we travel on this earth
with destroyed roads and waterways

Who can repair the damage done
roses are pretty, but the thorns
are a cautious warning....

Big Skies

Free Nature Beach photo and picture
Courtesy of Pixabay

I need big skies
and starry nights
where dreams take flight

I need vast lands
opening space within
where new stories begin

I need big seas
and wild waves
where adventure finds a way

I need alternative music
chorus of birdsong
where harmony belongs

Mother Nature

Where o’ where are flowers of spring
did mother nature make a mistake
for rain, sleet and snow she did bring
blue heron seeking balance by the lake
a goose honking, robins don’t sing
this cold weather is difficult to shake
where o’ where are flowers of spring

Summer Pops With Thoughts of You

Free Dragon-Fly Blue photo and picture
Courtesy of Pixabay

On a summer day
under skies of blue
surrounded by mountains
in green hues
drifting on the river
of mystical dreams

immersing myself
in the serenity of nature
a dragonfly lands on my hand
a small creature
thoughts of you pop
into my head

Pileated Woodpecker - Drum Solo

Pileated Woodpecker

What is that shrill coming from the trees
demanding my attention on a foul afternoon
a chisel like beak, tapping out a chant
what sort of wizardry can this be

sending out a brisk series of notes

I spin around in search of the magical sound
spying a bright red cap and wings of black
a white strip runs down your face and neck
tilting your head, you appear to be spellbound

drumming in a deep rapid rolling rhythm

a rare striking bird on a cold afternoon
channeling energy from the vast universe
pulsating beats in harmony with mother earth
rap, tapping a solo musician's wondrous tune

a standing ovation from an admirer below
clapping,  that was quite the show

If I Must Go

Courtesy of Pixabay

My days are numbered
I am an X of a tree
in my final hours, I
contemplate my destiny

If, I must go
may, I become a cradle or crib
a place for a new born to sleep
and dream within my limbs

If, I must go
may, I become a flute or wind-chime
allowing my voice to still be heard
blowing in the breeze

If, I must go
may, I become a flowery birdhouse
a  place for nesting in the spring
allowing me to hear sparrow songs

If, I must go
may, I become a canoe or paddle
traveling lakes and rivers enjoying
the beauty of nature

If, I  must go
may, I become a paperback novel
or a book of poetry filled with words
from the heart, dedicated to the tongues
of falling trees

If, I  must go
may, you be reminded, that without
trees,  life cannot survive, my dying wish
is for you to plant a seed in remembrance
of me.

author's note: The sign of the X on a tree signifies
the tree will be cut down around here.  So many
have their days numbered or no longer stand tall.

When will we learn to take only what is truly needed
and leave the rest to grow creating balance?

Wild Soul

Autumn

What do you know of my wild soul
it longs to soar with the birds up high
it longs to swim, with gills and fins
with the creatures of the river/sea

what if the birds all disappeared
what if the waterways simply dried up

What do you know of my wild soul
my inner desire to commune with nature
sitting on a mountaintop, on an autumn day
watching the squirrels and deer nearby

what if the trees were no longer here
what if there were no nuts or berries

What do you know of my wild soul
it follows the flute's sweet serenade
embracing a time where love reigned
dreaming under stars and moonlit sky

what if the music ceased to play
what if the stars no longer burned bright

What do you know of my wild soul
beating within me the poetry of life
leaving breadcrumbs in the journey
so you might know my wild soul....

Autumn Bouquet

The Sunday Muse

On tip-toe nail, come walk with me
under nature's bountiful canopy
bouquet of colored autumn leaves
a song of gentleness, I weave

there is no need for sharp arrows
would you silence the sparrows
into my world, I offer you an invite
guiding you towards wondrous light

leading you to fresh reflective waters
drink in its wonder, see what if offers
the ability of regeneration, is a gift
in the clearing, dark clouds will lift

a song of gentleness, I weave
bouquet of colored autumn leaves
under nature's bountiful canopy
a song of gentleness, I weave

River Hawk - Song of an Osprey

Courtesy of Pixabay

Facing the hot summer sun
a silhouette appears in the sky
swooping over the river edge
swerving in front of my path
I stand frozen, a frighten doe
adjusting my vision in bright light
pondering my next move

The river hawk, sharing energy
with a weary traveler, a reminder
that sometimes we need to claw
our way back spiritually, communing
with nature brings healing and balance
faith is at a tipping point and the
challenge of change is ahead

what are the desires of your heart

Awareness often brings clarity
after the blinding light of love
lingering clouds disperse liberating
the captive heart, freeing negativity
positive energy can once again flow
through the veins of consciousness
and the songs of hope sing loud

The river hawk, a catcher of fish
knows to take only what he needs
filling his belly when hunger strikes
the water recedes and diving into
the depth of understanding can be
difficult, how to navigate the
waterway to inner harmony, a
shaman will always dream a way

what song will nourish you soul

author's note: I had a surreal encounter with an Osprey
the other day.  I am honoring his visitation.

Owl Be Watching

Courtesy of The Sunday Muse

Into my dreams, the esoteric mystic flew
past the phantasmal veil there are clues
harbinger of warning in the web of night
guard your back on an uncharted flight
use caution in journeys to places of the heart

came the screeching HOO HOO Hoot, of an owl

There is vulnerability that can tear it apart
seeking the tree of deeper-rooted wisdom
use intuition see through the crystal prism
beyond the harbor, into the morning light
there's a lyrical song of love, yet to write

came the screeching HOO HOO Hoot, of an owl

To Understand - You Must Become

The Sunday Muse

 To understand the earth
you must become a
part of her world
hearing, seeing, touching
smelling and speaking
the tongue of wonderment

Do you hear the sounds
of the earth pulsating
can you hear the symphony
of the rain-forest, roaring waves
the gentle songs of her creatures

Do you see the wonders of the
earth, her trees, mountains
waterfalls, deserts and meadows
the beauty of the smallest
animal to the largest
the grace of a rainbow

Do you feel the soil of the
earth, barefoot, digging deep
grit of the earth under your nails
planting new seeds of hope
reaching towards sunlight

Do you smell the scents
of the earth, flowers in
bloom, fresh rain, the
rich soil after the rain
the aroma of fresh cut grass

Do you speak the tongue
of the earth, the language
of nature, harmonizing with
the trees, flowers and bees
are you able to whistle
in birdsong

To understand the earth
you must embrace the
elements of her beauty
become a spiritual being
endlessly growing towards
the light

Are you able to tap
into the sixth sense
let intuition be your guide

may you always reach towards the light

Oh Sweet Robins

As long as there is food available, American Robins may stay north in cold climates. Photo by Chuck Porter via Birdshare.
Photo by Chuck Porter via Birdshare.

Oh sweet robins
has your flock lost its way
on this cold winter day

snow blankets the earth
hungry seeking food to eat
to find a bug would be a feat

January air is crisp and cold
open your wings little ones, fly south
for there you can fill you mouth

changing climate causes confusion
altered flight patterns, early arrival
late departures, a matter of survival

Oh sweet robins
I pray you find your way
return with songs on a warm spring day

author's note:  I went for a walk this afternoon
and to my great surprise, I found myself surrounded
by a flock of robins.  They are rarely seen around here
in the winter.  So, I did a google search and occasionally
a nomadic flock can be seen when they are looking
for food.  This poem was birthed on the spot as I
watched them in the trees and searching the ground.
