Today, after a long stretch of bitter cold I feel the warmth of the sun. The temperature rises out of the single digits. Wrapped in my winter gear I head out for a walk. The snow from last week is still heavy and appears to have lost its gleam. The wind is eerily silent and the trees no longer creak and groan in protest of the harsh weather.
The sky is a wonderful shade of cobalt blue deep and rich. Overhead a small flock of ducks search out a place to land. I quicken my steps as I know where they are headed to the small cove where the water doesn’t freeze. It is spring fed and here a lone goose spends the cold winter days with occasional visiting ducks. Hurriedly, I step in the hard crunching snow making my way down the bank. I need to check on the goose. Hand on my heart I see her and breathe a sigh of relief.
Hopefully, spring will arrive earlier than expected and melt all this snow away. Making room for daffodils and spring dreams.

DeleteWhat a wonderful trip through nature and the hope of spring on the horizon - Jae
ReplyDeleteThanks Jae Rose - waiting on Spring
DeleteI particularly love your description in second paragraph.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rosemary for reading.
DeleteI would love to have a longer winter season actually... I think though we are in winter-spring at the moment.
ReplyDeleteHi Bjorn - Winter can be a wonderful season but the freezing cold and snow have been a bit harsher this year. Plus it is no fun shoveling and cleaning off a car.
DeleteIt’s always a joy when winter sun breaks through, Truedessa, and your haibun had the same effect, especially the cobalt blue sky, which gives us hope for spring. I’m glad you found the goose.
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree when I wake up and see the sun on a winter day it makes me smile. That goose is special to me as I helped it survive it's first winter here alone. She is unable to fly as she has a damaged wing. I would feed her berries and greens.
DeleteThey should've pulled Phil's furry butt out a day early. Then he wouldn't have seen his shadow!
ReplyDeleteThe sky was a very deep blue yesterday...
That is too funny one day sooner then we would have an early spring. The reliability of a groundhog is sketchy at best. haha thanks for the smile
DeleteI love "hand on my heart, I see her." Poor goose, may spring soon warm her feathers.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sherry, the goose is a survivor hopefully warmer days come soon.
DeleteIt seemed to me earlier this year some geese and ducks were pushing their luck. Then they end up crowding the rivers and corn fields until finally they leave it all to the wild turkeys. And crows. I was delighted to see the somewhat ominous crow in your haiku.
ReplyDeletehmm Sounds like you get large flocks where your reside.
DeleteSuch velvet-rich imagery.
ReplyDeleteI so love that you checked on the goose, I would do that!
