Walk Amongst the Buffalo

Respect the buffalo way of learning
bring awareness into your sphere
who is in need in the journey

Share what gifts you have available
food, clothing, a message of hope

Perhaps, a song on a buffalo drum
can you hear the ancestors chanting
take only what you need…

Remain connected to the earth
with strength you can weather
life’s storms with grace

Walk in the spirit of gratitude
practice the art of humility that
the universe will provide

Unity is key to survival in
an ever changing world....

Your mission is to write a poem influenced by The Seven Grandfather Teachings in any way that you would like to approach the theme

I am deeply connected to the buffalo spirit.  I play a Native American hoop drum made of buffalo hide it has a strong voice that needs to be heard. I wrote this in respect of my drum and all it represents in my journey.

Peace and love....

Autumn Leaves

courtesy of Pixabay

There is a place beyond my drum
where ancient songs softly hum
gateway to shamanic mysteries

On this medicine wheel of hope
here the wild spirited wolf roams
between ocean and forest foams
black bear saunters at his own pace
should he worry about the human race
red tail soars the mourning ashen sky
searching for blue somewhere up high
in the distance buffalo hooves rumble
somewhere a piece of earth crumbles

There is a place beyond my drum
where heartfelt dreams thump
gateway to unknown peripheries

On this earth wheel of love
we continuously circle
on the sacred land of the turtle
from the stormy sea of loss
barefoot standing on spongy moss
the willow can only bend so much
before she breaks at a mere touch
a thorn is a thorn a reminder of pain
in the turbulent autumn relentless rain

There is a place beyond my drum
where ancient stories come from
gateway to natural synergy

On this earth wheel of dreams
traveling the waterway of birth
writing page one of life on earth
through the changing seasons of life
the heavens guide us towards light
growing and reaching new height
chapters in between are ours to write
searching for the poetry of inner art
hoping to find love before we depart

There is a place beyond my drum
where heaven and earth become one
it is a place I wish you could see....

A Thousand Buffalo Feet

Buffalo, Oklahoma, Bison, American, Wild

My heart weary
I sit by the riverside
drum in hand, trying
to catch a pulse

It starts out slow
an unsteady beat

building up momentum
a thousand buffalo feet

clouds lift revealing
blue sky an eagle
flies above

I begin to feel
alive....

author's note:  I play a Native American
hoop drum made of buffalo hide. Sometimes,
it seems to have a voice of it's own thundering
hooves of a herd of  buffalo.  It has been an honor
to sit in a circle of drummers to welcome
dreams and the solstice. This year it will be
done remotely.

drums, beats and dreams...

Ratatat of the Drum

art of Danny Gregory

The date was special February 2nd
she too wanted to play the drums
the beat of her heart beckoned
as she longed to hear his hums

to move to the rhythm of his soul
fingering the stick, lightning strikes
losing control to his rock n roll
ratatat, adrenaline quickly spikes

filling the room with a joyous sound
exploring textures with each brush
transcending time, cymbals pound
breaking barriers, waters rush

flood of emotions fills the room
drowning in the depth of each beat
becoming the music with each boom
in tune with one another they meet

An Altered State of Mind

© Don Holland, OR, April 2007

in the early morning sunrise
breaking night's dark silence
pounding heart of my drum
thump
  thump
    thump
     thump
drifting into another distant  realm
my spirit soars to high  mountain tops
inhaling  deep aroma of green pines

another beat of the drumstick
I fly with the red tailed hawk
gliding over mossy river banks
thump
   thump
     thump
       thump
clearer vision in my  peripheral view
stirring my awareness , synchronicity
between human and wild raptor

buffalo skin, stretched with each beat
chanting rhythm of ancient songs
leading my spirit to where it belongs
thump
  thump
    thump
      thump
haunting melody,  hypnotic  trance
induces a dream dance of two souls
barefoot entering the sacred circle

joining hands with the wolf and bear
uniting the past with the present
transformation, with each beat
thump
  thump
    thump
      thump
searching for all I can find
in an altered state of mind
awakening with each vibration
