Ratatat of the Drum

art of Danny Gregory

The date was special February 2nd
she too wanted to play the drums
the beat of her heart beckoned
as she longed to hear his hums

to move to the rhythm of his soul
fingering the stick, lightning strikes
losing control to his rock n roll
ratatat, adrenaline quickly spikes

filling the room with a joyous sound
exploring textures with each brush
transcending time, cymbals pound
breaking barriers, waters rush

flood of emotions fills the room
drowning in the depth of each beat
becoming the music with each boom
in tune with one another they meet

    1. There is something magical when you catch that beat. I play a simple hoop drum nothing quite as elaborate as this kit. But, I do love the rhythm.

  2. Moving to the rhythm of his soul......in tune with one another......this is wonderful to read - the tempo of the poem felt as quick as a drumbeat - a great read!

  3. You brought the beats to life... drums are def the foundation to music: the emotion they exude is unmatched... not to mention they're just awesome. I wanted to play drums for awhile in my teens - changed my mind and took up ukulele... smiles

  4. I think getting into that rhythm - absorbed in the beat.. A dream for the drummer,, not always for the roommates or parents.

    1. That is true Bjorn I am sure the drummer gets lost in the rhythm and perhaps, just enjoys the moment. Maybe, not so good for those wanting to sleep.

  9. I wondered if anyone would use this sketch. Smiles. This seems to build up to a romantic crescendo when 'in tune with one another they meet.'

  11. Finding the other is very much like finding someone with whom you play in unison, following the same beat. I like that!

  13. Great poem. It took me back to my young days when my next door neighbor practiced his drums and my cousins, who lived in the apartment downstairs, were obsessed with drumming too. My house was always full of the percussion, the passion, the beat of drums. I loved it.

  16. From our heart to everything else in motion, it's the beat, the beat that sets the rhythm, pace, & emotion of any event. Music is the universal language & drum beats, I suspect eclipse the universal, shaping the cosmic.

    1. Music is indeed universal it can transcend many barriers in life and the world as a whole. The beat of life is within us.

  17. Writing this to a meter worked so well for the subject. I like to tune into the percussion in any type of band/orchestra. It's in our bodies, that beat.
