fire burns in the heart of the gathering
drums beat; echoing through the trees
here there is a sense of mystery
Three red tailed hawks fly in from
the north, east and west and meet
overhead; swooping
aerobatics
I am fascinated by their beauty
The distance flute player lures the
feather friends closer with the
rising and descending melody
ancient spirits soar on wide wings
Sing to me in the
Iroquois tongue
my spirit soars
with the wild hawks
Closing my eyes, I am drifting away
in time to the days of the longhouse
with my ancestors.
Sweet grass and sage fill the air
cleansing the sacred land of impurities
my flesh warms to the 3:00 p.m. sun
as the dancers enter the circle.
A vision comes to me, I see a wolf
watching from the trees in the north
brother bear watching from the west
I walk on the edge of another reality...
Bear is protector and wolf brings
messages of wisdom.

perimeter.
Resting on a log through blue mist I
see a messenger, he sits with me and
shares a dream...
Who will care for mother earth? Our
waters and air are polluted. Plants
are dying, species are near extinction
When will humans see with open
eyes?
There will be a day when the well
runs dry and the people will thirst
for fresh water...
There will be a day when the air is thick
and grey; people will struggle for breath...
There will be a day of awakening and that
day needs to come soon, remove the blinders
so you can truly see the gifts bestowed on
you.
Sing to me in the
Iroquois tongue
the songs of the
ancestors will ring true...
Author's note: I attended a Pow-Wow and
was granted a vision. I am bringing honor
to part of the journey in hopes that we
will take care of our planet. Not, even a
week later, the current administration
has rolled back part of the clean water
protection act.

(sigh)
You really convey the sense of song so well
ReplyDeleteThank you for listening to the song!
DeleteYou wrap this important message about our planet in musical ethereal spirituality. The images you paint are first mesmeric..., then peel away to harsh reality. Loved it!
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading the message.
DeleteI wonder too when we will truly listen... maybe in the mean-time we can only do our best to be good.
ReplyDeleteIn many ways, listening has become a lost art.
DeleteI think we sometimes hear but, truly do not comprehend what the message is revealing.
DeleteThe reason we do not hear is because we now live in a society where people are so obsessed with expressing themselves they have forgotten to listen and learn and learn from history and the past. Our education systems are very flawed and the push for consumerism is overwhelming. The waste we generate in the wealthy countries is obscene.
DeleteWith the stuff thrown out on the street where I live in the city you could furnish an entire house and with the building materials thrown out, beautiful old doors and fireplaces, tiles iron gates you could build a house for very little. Sorry for the rant but it is all so terribly terribly wrong.
Hi Rall,
DeleteNo need to apologize for the rant. You made some valid points and it's good to converse.
This poem is beautiful and speaks to my heart. I love the hawks flying in from three directions and meeting......when the People gather here on the West Coast, the eagles always come. I can hear the sound of the drums, feel the watchful presence of the ancestors, who prophesied that these times would come. My new favourite poem of yours, full of all my favourite beings.
ReplyDeleteThank you my fried, I know you hear the message.
DeleteWe can only do our best as individuals.
ReplyDeleteThat is very true and each little bit helps in the grand scheme.
DeleteI could feel the heartbeat in the poem.
ReplyDeletesmiles so good to know
DeleteSuch a strong message portrayed so elegantly!❤️ I especially like; "There will be a day of a wakening and that day needs to come soon, remove the blinders so you can truly see the gifts bestowed on you."❤️
ReplyDeleteI hope the awakening comes before too much damage has occurred.
DeleteHow wonderful that you were invited to a pow wow and were gifted with a vision. And what a wonderful vision it was. I do hope for this day of reckoning and for a change of heart. We need to listen to these protectors. No surprise that Sherry resonates with this poem. Smiles.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary, the day was reflective.
DeleteA compelling and important piece. You have captured, with your words, a powerful evocation of that which is primordial and wise and true. Clearly this was a transcendent experience, and you have articulated the profundity of it with reverence. Everything about this poem is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Wendy, I love reading your comments they are so uplifting. Have a wonderful week!
Delete"There will be a day of awakening" - a strong pronouncement and vision. It is hard to keep sight of the vision when we see the works of those who contradict it. But I feel keeping that vision is what helps us move forward contradicting them. I loved reading this. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI believe hope is what keeps us moving forward with the desire to change what we can.
DeleteThank you for reading!
I liked this, T.D, I liked reading of your scary vision. If we dont turn into a messy power grab like in "V" nation to the south and our people will take charge again it might not come true.
ReplyDeleteWay back in the 80's Mrs. Jim and I attended an Omaha Indian Pow Wow in Nebraska. We had a program which helped us understand. I'd like to visit another, it was quite nice.
Thanks for visiting me, my writings change tone along with my mood.
..
Hi Jim,
DeleteThanks for the comment. I think a lot of the problem is corporate greed as they look for short-cuts which means
deregulation on waste.
I am worried about our water and air quality for the generations yet to come. I read an article that stated more
people today have asthma then ever before and it's due to air quality in certain area. Why would that be?
We all need to remove the blinders. This reads like a sacred song.
ReplyDeleteThanks Colleen, maybe if we all just try to see the bigger picture we can be part of the solution.
DeleteI went to a pow wow when I was a little girl. Your description transported to that fun time.
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth, I am glad you were transported to a happy memory.
DeleteGood gods, I so loathe the creature squatting in the White House. But I know his removal won't guarantee people will finally listen. Still it would be an auspicious start. I hope for all our sakes that it won't be too late.
ReplyDeleteThanks Rommy, we need to start somewhere, I am just not sure how that will all happen?
