Endless beauty, majestic scenery
visionaries traversing the desert
humming vortex of magnetic energy
ancient gatekeepers stand alert
tingling sensation, mounting anticipation
portal to another dimension
valley of the gods
perched high above the canyon walls
meditating to the sound of ancient drums
within eyesight, a condor circling
a master of the azure sky
desert willows, juniper trees, wild cactus flowers
a vista of parched land, a tumbleweed
rolls past on a half-hearten breeze
ascending to a higher consciousness
silence hovers, awareness becomes acute
ghostly apparitions, dwellers of mysticism
guard the tall monuments of yesterday
a terrain where souls cry over lost dreams
adventures never full-filled…how many
traveled before I, in this sacred place
of towering red sandstone buttes
harmony in the heartbeat of the land

Thinking of a friend, today
I have been to the Arizona Desert and when I was there the vortexes were strong often my equilibrium was off.
Your poem drew me right in. I could almost hear the drums. Very beautiful. I hope humanity will ascend to a higher consciousness. The alternative is terrifying.
ReplyDeleteI love the urgency of this poem - as if being plunged into the atmosphere and visceral nature of the desert - Jae
ReplyDeleteThe stunning visuals in the poem immediately catch hold of the mind and immerse it in the scenes. This is indeed a "sacred place". Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou've captured the feel of the desert. Lived in Arizona a few years and the desert is just beautiful.
ReplyDelete"portal to another dimension" You draw this scene so beautifully, layer upon layer as your poem builds. And at the same time, I feel a person going deeper and deeper into a space beyond time and place. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteHi Truedessa - you've certainly captured an ethereal aura ... I imagine the scenery in Arizona just staggers the eyes and brain. I hope you've found some peace from the poem for you and your friend. With thoughts - Hilary
ReplyDeleteYou have characterized the desert in so many different ways,Truedessa. Not only its look, but also its sacred essence! Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteGreat poem. You describe the spiritual resonance of the desert so well. It has that effect on me but also that sense of reality check and the cries of lost dreams. Suzanne - Wayfaring - Wordpress blog.
ReplyDeleteMonument Valley? What a sight it must be.
ReplyDeleteTruedessa,
ReplyDeleteI felt as though I had journeyed with you into that desert setting. Your description was so comprehensive.
A scene painted with tangible emotions...thank you..
From the first stanza on, I was caught up in the magnetism and transcending pull of the Arizona desert, which I've never visited, but now, through the potent imagery of your words, feel as if I have. Beautifully doen, Truedessa.
ReplyDeleteOoh. This is one of my favorites.
