Trains, Rain and Refrains

Clickety-clack goes a distance train
pondering where the rail tracks lead
anticipating the early morning rain

I want to pen a bluesy quatrain
soulful lyrics circulate in my head
clickety-clack goes a distance train

gray skies outside the window pane
drifting into a lucid dream in my bed
anticipating the early morning rain

concentrating on rhythmic refrains
there is much that needs to be said
clickety-clack goes a distance train

wishing I could see you once again
so many lines crossed and misread
anticipating the early morning rain

melancholy songs are hard to contain
how many tears must one shed
clickety-clack goes a distance train
anticipating the early morning rain

For today’s Poetics prompt, She'd like us to read the lyrics, listen to the song, and write a poem about whatever it evokes for you

Where or When (things past)

Where or when things past
I know not the window of time
does it matter, why do you ask

Can you stop a runaway train
traveling on the wrong track
clickety-clack in falling rain

Standing on a lonely platform
watching arrivals & departures
trying to weather the storm

Where or when things past
I know not the window of time
does it matter, why do you ask

Can you start a new soul journey
if you’re stuck in some muck
should it even concern me

I could write heartfelt verses
would you feel my poetic words
unlocking the mysterious universe

Where or when things past
I know not the window of time
does it matter, why do you ask

Can dreams change our direction
can we intersect at the crossing
leading us on a path of transition

The wheels of time can be cruel
singing the ballads of yesterday
thinking of you, feeling blue

Where or when things past
I know not the window of time
does it matter, why do you ask

For those looking for inspiration, here is our optional mini-prompt: write an ekphrastic poem based on Gertrude Abercrombie’s painting (see below) and/or use the title “Where or When (Things Past)”, as part of your poem.

No-Where Train

Tired of riding this no-where train
can't you see, I need to keep moving
there's a song playing after the rain

clickety-clack out the window pane
sometimes, life can be confusing
tired of riding this no-where train

let's sip some pink champagne
change the track, to our choosing
there's a song playing after the rain

singing about life's sweetest refrain
the rhythm and rhyme are soothing
tired of riding this nowhere train

love, is something I can't explain
days are lighter, the tunes improving
there's a song playing after the rain

who knows how much time remains
spring wonders will be blooming
tired of riding this nowhere train
there's a song playing after the rain

a villanelle

author's note:  The hook for this came to
me on my afternoon walk, I could hear
the train on the nearby tracks.

Into the Horizon

steadily she follows the track
seeking light in an eastern sky
shadowy spirit dressed in black
steadily she follows the track
sun on her face, moon on her back
she missed the train it passed her by
steadily she follows the track
seeking light in an eastern sky
